No Place To Hide V1 Fell in love in an all night diner, Jukebox played my favourite tune, Cup of Joe was a constant reminder, Of how we talked, the whole night through. refrain I had no place to hide, When emotions collide, She was all I desired, For the rest of my life. I had no place to hide, I was out of my mind, I had no place to hide, For the rest of my life. V2 We made some plans, to make our escape, Hard to be real, in a flat top grill, All root and branch, to make a clean break, But promises made, soon start to fade, refrain I had no place to hide, I was on the outside, I had no place to hide, For the rest of my life. She was hot like a chilly special, Shared the mystery of a cherry pie, She lived life for the smallest pleasure, I wanted more and I don’t know why. I had no place to hide, I had no place to hide, I had no place to hide, For the rest of my life I had no place to hide, I was out of my mind, It was hard to decide, For the rest of my life Bridge Each day was a learning curve, Tried so hard to make it last, When you ride the highest surf, Ain’t no time for looking back. I had no place to hide, When you’ve run out of time, I was out of my mind, ….With no place to hide © Feenstra & Simpson
Originally recorded as part of a potential 4 track EP, the duo eventually settled on the single release format that has served them so well so far.
“Retro-whimsical nostalgic feelings” with “a dash of anglo-oriented breeziness.” Raw Ramp Magazine
“Upbeat feeling with an easy groove, perfect Radio 2 territory—good listening and that sing-along beat.” Rock The Joint Magazine.
Regarding the song, vocalist and musician John Simpson explains: “When Pete first sent me the lyrics and his outline for a melody he suggested it was Bob Dylan territory.
I immediately felt it would suit a shuffle. It took quite a long time to record all the parts, and I don’t know if it hints at Dylan, but I expect my usual Beatle influences will not be far away.”
Lyricist Pete Feenstra adds: “I sent John a number of different but related songs with a story narrative and a pop feel.
John sent me back his musical ideas, and I quickly warmed to his enduring pop sensibility, aligned with his harmonies, and biting guitar tones.
I was thinking of maybe a Dylan tinged filmic feel, because of the diner imagery, but John quickly set about transforming it into a great pop tune. As the chorus suggests, the song is about how love can reveal different things about us: “I had no place to hide, when emotions collide.”
Video producer Stuart Ridgard immediately tapped into the song’s meaning and came up with a great visual representation.
John concludes: “We usually work on one song at a time, but this song was one of four I started at the same time and one inspired the other.
We’ve also been asked about an album, which again we had never contemplated, but the more we have released the more people have asked us, so you never know.”
